William was the oldest of seven children born to Josiah W. Figg and Agnes Abigail POLLARD-FIGG-HESKETT. The family moved to Iowa from Virginia in about 1853. When William was about 18, his father passed away. William married Letitia F. Poff ten years later, and had four children before his life took some unhappy turns. His wife took up with William's brother, and William moved to Wyoming. He appeared on the 1930 census of Casper, Wyoming. He was able to return to Iowa late in life and visit with some remaining family members.
