Pound, VA--Quietly and peacefully, Fred Merrell Mullins departed this life on Saturday, September 22, 2007. Fred was born Oct. 18, 1915 at Oven Fork, KY to the late Lloyd M. and Florence Jones Mullins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Beulah Bolling Mullins; his sister, Thelma Barker; and his brothers, Harold, Newman and Stacy Mullins.

Fred was a graduate and Valedictorian of the 1934 class of Christopher Gist High School in Pound, VA. He was the last surviving member of their 1934 Virginia State Championship Basketball Team. After graduation he continued his education at Milligan and Emory & Henry colleges.

Fred taught school in Wise County until Consolidated Coal Company in Jenkins, KY employed him as a bookkeeper. In 1956 he became Postmaster in Pound, VA, serving the community until his retirement in 1979. Fred was also a proud veteran of World War II. He served in the United States Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific until his discharge in 1945. At that time he said he had seen enough of the world and he returned to Pound to live the rest of his life.

Service to the community was a priority to Fred. He was devoted to his work in the Pound Lions Club, where he was selected "Lion of The Year" many times. He was also a devoted member of the Pound Methodist Church and the Pound Masonic Lodge # 59 AF&AM. He served as Treasurer for all the above until he lost his eyesight.

Fred leaves to cherish his memory one son, Frederick J. Mullins and wife Jennifer of Pound, VA; one granddaughter, Dr. Erin Mullins and husband Kevin of Wise, VA; great-grandsons, John Patrick Mullins-Stallard, Andrew, Christian, Tre and Ty Mullins all of Wise, VA; a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Mullins of Wise, VA; he also leaves Heather and Josh Hayes of Pound, VA and Lauren, Gabriel and Jordan Barnette of Wise, VA that all seemed like his grandchildren; brothers Nile and wife Janice Mullins of Kingsport, TN and Kenneth Mullins of Fayetteville, Ark.; special nieces, Marla Dorton and Dianne and husband Larry Hubbard of Pound, VA; many other nieces and nephews; his church family; members and staff of the Pound Senior Citizens Club, especially Faye Barker; and a host of friends and loved ones.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-7:30 PM on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 at Baker Funeral Home. A celebration of Fred's life will follow with the Rev. Greg Garland officiating.

Family and friends will meet at Baker Funeral Home on Wed., Sept. 26, 2007 at 10 AM to leave in procession for Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. At 11 AM the Pound V.F.W. Post 9600 and the Pound Masonic Lodge # 59 AF&AM will conduct graveside services. Entombment will follow.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Jackson, Don Sturgill, Doug Bolling, Van Buren Boggs and Members of the Pound Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pound Methodist Church, the Pound Lions Club or the Pound Rescue Squad.
