Published in The Paducah Sun (McCracken Co., KY), Mon., 23 Jun 1975 - LA CENTER, Ky., June 23 - Percy A. Jones, 95, who was appointed the first postmaster of La Center by President Theodore Roosevelt when the town was incorporated in 1903, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Piper Center Care home here.

A lifelong resident of Ballard County, Mr. Jones was prominent in civic and community affairs. He was Kentucky's oldest funeral director and held the oldest funeral director's license in the state at the time of his death.

Mr. Jones was the first mayor of La Center, serving additional terms totaling more than 20 years. He was chairman of the Ballard County Board of Education in the 1920s and was instrumental in building the first Ballard County High School in La Center.

The first embalmer in the county, he embalmed more than 90 people in their homes during the flu epidemic of 1917 and 1918.

He served as president of the West Kentucky Funeral Directors Association in 1947. In 1970, the association gave a dinner in his honor at Paducah in observance of his long service to his profession and presented him with a plaque.

Mr. Jones was a graduate of National University of Lebanon, Ohio, Bryan and Stratton Business College in Louisville, and Cincinnati College of Embalming.

In addition to his other activities, Mr. Jones was engaged in the hay, grain, feed, coal and field see business for many years, buying and shipping corn, wheat and hay from farmers.

He was a member of La Center Christian Church, and of the Masonic Lodge for more than 70 years. He was a member of North Ballard Lodge No. 537 F&AM at the time at the time of his death.

His wife of 67 years, Mrs. Mattie Jones, died last October.

He is survived by four sons, Jack Jones of North Manchester, Ind., Jim Jones of La Center, Dr. T. R. Jones of Jasper, Texas, and W. R. Jones of Kevil; one brother, Russell Jones of McCracken County; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted at the Jones Funeral Home here at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. W. W. Morris and the Rev. Bill Roberts will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery near Woodville. Milner Phillips Funeral Home in Wickliffe be in charge of arrangements.
