Daughter of Andrew and Sarah Glass Lakin, born in Illinois in 1863.

Alice married twice and it appears she divorced both husbands.

On 5 November 1886 she married Charles G Seeberger, in Sangamon County, Illinois. Likely the wedding was in Springfield, the county seat and capital of Illinois. (Charles gave his birthplace as Germany as well as his immigration year in the 1900 Census, but his Death Record states Baltimore, Maryland.) Charles worked as both a bartender and a barber, I would hope at different times but of course I don't know!

Charles was at least 10 years older than Alice and may have been married before. I say this because the elder of 2 daughters living with the family in 1900 gives her birth date as May 1879, 7 years before Alice and Charles married; her name was Dora and she was born in Illinois. I have not been able to find Dora later in her life.

The second daughter was named Etta Marie, born March 1892, also in Illinois.

I could not find the family in the 1910 Census, but found Charles and Alice both in numerous Springfield, Illinois City Directories in the early 1900's.

The 1908 Springfield City Directory shows Alice and Charles are living apart. Alice is listed at 219 W. Jefferson, and shows her as a dressmaker. Charles is listed as a bartender, living at 210 W. Jefferson. Daughter, Marie, who would be 16 years of age in 1908, has a separate listing at her mother's address.

Two years later, however, Alice, Charles, and Marie (now going by Etta M) are all listed in the Springfield City Directory at the same residence, 216 W. Jefferson. Alice also has a listing in the Dressmaker section of the Directory.

One year later, 1911, finds a major change in Alice's life as she is living in Los Angeles per the Los Angeles City Directory. She is living at 616 E. 16th and my guess is she has brought daughter Etta Marie with her as Etta is in Los Angeles in later years. Alice's dressmaker occupation is noted. The date of Alice's move to Los Angeles is corroborated by her Death Certificate which states she had lived in Los Angeles for 25 years.

Checking to see if Charles remained in Springfield, I found him in both the 1917 Springfield City Directory and a newspaper article dated 14 Nov 1917 (Daily Illinois State Journal) regarding his service as a juror. So it is clear Charles and Alice have at least separated and likely divorced.

Sometime between 1913 and 1919, Alice remarried. This was to Daniel F Buck, born ~1873 in Minnesota per the 1920 Census. In that Census she is 56 and he is 47. Daniel works as a streetcar driver. They are living at 1229 Trenton Street, Los Angeles.

It appears this marriage did not last long as Alice is listed as Divorced in the 1930 Census. She is living with her married daughter, Etta Marie Reeves, her husband, Robert H Reeves, and their twin boys, Lorn H and Ralph J, 3 years, 2 months old. The family is living at 908 Graves Ave. in the city of San Gabriel in eastern Los Angeles County. Robert is a shoemaker at a shoe repair shop and gives his birth location only as USA (same for his parents).

Alice is listed as a widow on her Death Certificate, but the spouse's name was requested and Etta Marie, the Informant, listed Daniel Buck. I was not able to locate a Death Record for Daniel, however.

Alice died at 520 Meridian Terrace, City of Los Angeles. Since her daughter was the Informant, her address was also documented and it is the same.

I am happy to have located Alice's burial location so this memorial could be developed for her. I researched her birth family earlier this year and believe I have now located the burial locations of all of her siblings as well as her parents.
