Barbara McCune Musser Merrill 8/20/1915 ~ 11/29/2009 Barbara McCune Musser was born and raised in Salt Lake City, the daughter of Barr White Musser and Margaret Leah McCune. Her grandfather Amos M. Musser was one of the first LDS missionaries in India, in the 1850s. Her great-grandfather Matthew W. McCune and his family were LDS converts in India and pioneered in central Utah. Her grandmother Elizabeth Grace crossed the plains with the Mormon pioneers as a young girl. On 11 August 1939 she married Eugene Hyde Merrill, son of Joseph Francis Merrill and Annie Laura Hyde, in the Salt Lake Temple. Barbara and Eugene had six children. The first, Eugene Hyde II, died in infancy. Five survive: Hyde, Barbara Jean, Roger, Laura, and John, with more than 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Barbara and Eugene were active in progressive politics. They were among the outstanding young Utah couples of their generation who seized opportunities in Washington, DC, and made great contributions. Most of their life together was spent in Washington and on diplomatic assignments in Berlin and Paris. A brilliant and gracious woman, her life's mission was to reach out to, lift, and encourage others, particularly the underdog. She walked with kings but kept the common touch -people responded to her magically. She was unusually Alive; she seemed capable of doing anything and making anything happen. She had a creative and unerring sense of style and was very effective as wife of a senior public servant and diplomat. She wrote for the Salt Lake Times from Washington and Berlin. She was a passionate artist and pianist and wrote touching poetry. Her children saw her as a glamorous wife and mother who made her family her first priority. She had great faith and testified fervently of the Prophet Joseph Smith. She always served in the Church; dearest to her heart was the Young Women's Organization. She and Eugene sent three sons on missions. After Eugene died in 1973, she worked for Senator Frank E. Moss in Washington and as a realtor in Salt Lake City. She expanded her circle of friends while treasuring her old ones. She reached out with compassion to family, friends, and acquaintances. We rejoice in having been touched by her. Contemplating her death, she wrote to her children, "Surely our love for each other will extend to whatever corner is mine in heaven and I will be supremely happy over the happiness and achievements of my beautiful family. I hope Daddy will find me." She was the last of her generation. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 3, at 10:30 a.m. at Larking Mortuary, 260 East South Temple St., Salt Lake City. A viewing will precede the services at 9:00 a.m.
