Born in Louisville, KY, he moved his family to Porland, in 1882. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was trained as a carpenter.
He was married to Mary Oakey Doyle and they had 4 children, Edward, Arthur, Albert (A. E. Doyle, an architect), and Daisy.
He is buried in the family plot at River View Cemetery.
