Elijah Hyde was born January 20, 1754 at Norwich "West Farms" (now Franklin), New London County, Connecticut, the 1st of 7 children born of Jacob Hyde (1730-1815) and his wife, Hannah (Hazen) Hyde (1729-1809). Elijah moved with his parents to Bennington on the New Hampshire Grants (now Vermont) about 1766.

Tradition has it that Elijah participated in the Battle of Bennington, August 1777. He served as a Corporal in Captain William Hutchin's (2nd Bennington) Company, Colonel Samuel Herrick's Vermont Militia Regiment commencing October 11, 1780 for 18 days during the alarm caused by the raid led by British Major Christopher Carleton into the Lake Champlain Valley and beyond. Elijah was also a Sergeant in Captain Isaac Tichenor's (2nd Bennington) Company, Colonel Ebenezer Walbridge's Vermont Militia Regiment commencing October 13, 1781 for 16 days. During this period of service, Captain Tichenor's Company was posted at Castleton (Fort Warren), Rutland County, Vermont.

Elijah married, about 1781, his 4th cousin Elizabeth (Betsey) Edgerton (1764-1797) then of Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont by whom he had 8 children: Alexander (1782-1843), Jacob (1785-1787), Lois (b. 1787), Jonathan (b. 1789), Williard G. (b. 1792), Charles (1794-1795), Mary (b. 1796), and Elizabeth (b. 1797). Their first 3 children were born in Bennington, Vermont. Their last 5 children were born in South Hero (now Grand Isle), Vermont.

Elijah married (2nd), 1798, Rebecca Stark (1779-1861) by whom he also had 8 children: Charles (b. 1799), Caroline (b. 1801), James W. (b. 1803), Asabel (1805-1840), Ruth Ann (b. 1807), Elijah (b. 1809), Ahi (b. 1811), and Sarah (b. 1818). Elijah (1754-1920) died at Grand Isle, Grand Isle County, Vermont, December 12, 1820.
