She was born in Loraine on March 11, 1930 to Lee and Alice Stalcup Barnfield.
Miss Dessie held many jobs in her younger years including being a farmhand and rancher but the job that she enjoyed the most was that of being a school bus driver for Colorado ISD. She was the counties first woman bus driver, a title that she was proud of. Her job as a bus driver led her to be instrumental in the integration of the school system as she drove bus when the school first integrated. Dessie was a retiree from the school system, not only driving but also working in the lunch room and helping with maintenance in the bus garage. After her retirement she spent her days sitting with the elderly and giving them a person to talk to in their final years, as talking was one of her favorite things to do. She had many hobbies, she was known as the garage sale queen, and was proficient at the mile a minute crochet stitch. She had an extensive collection of dolls, some homemade and some received from the area children, each one with its own name, often named after the child that gave her the doll. Many of the dolls that she made were made for a higher purpose as they were given away to a child in need in the Lubbock pediatric ward. Dessie was a staple of the community, a member of the Baptist community, and had never met a stranger because everybody in town knew her.
Miss Dessie is survived by her children Dessie Ann McCullough of Watauga, Laura Arnett and husband Michael of Colorado City, and Alfred Lynch and wife Dana of Colorado City. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, 4 siblings and all of Colorado City as she considered all she knew and grew with as family.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband L.J. Lynch, her son J.J. Lynch, and 8 siblings.
A funeral service for Miss Dessie will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, March 15th at the First Baptist Church of Colorado City with the Rev. Jerry Shields officiating, burial will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery.
