Luella M. Hahnel,
longtime nurse

A memorial service for Luella M. Hahnel of 3940 Northwest Road will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Westford Funeral Home chapel.

Mrs. Hahnel died Thursday, Aug. 31, 1995, at St Joseph Hospital. She was 68.

Born June 1, 1927, to Mike and Edna Tjoelker in Lynden, she graduated from Lynden High School in 1944.

She graduated from Cachet Nurse Corps and had a long career in nursing and administration.

Mrs. Hahnel was the emergency room supervisor at St. Luke's Hospital before becoming the manager of Northwest Women's Clinic. She then became the first administrator of the Bellingham Surgery Center where she was instrumental in its construction and operation. She retired earlier this year.

She devoted her time to the Laurendeau Foundation, served on the Visiting Nurse Board and was former president of the Washington State Free-Standing Ambulatory Surgery Association.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Tjoelker.
