Ervin L. Cook passed away in his home on July 3, 2005 at the age of 86. He was born in Hiawatha, Utah, on December 21, 1918, to Joseph and Lucy Cook. Ervin grew up in Castledale, Utah. After graduating high school, he worked for two years with the Conservation Corps. He served his country in World War II as a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

After his discharge from the service, he returned to Utah to work for Columbia Coal Mine. He met his wife Hazel Bennett in 1946; they were married on February 16, 1947, and started their family in Dragerton, Utah. The family moved to Eureka in 1967, where Ervin worked for the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District for 18 years.

"Ren" as he was known to family and friends, was devoted to his family. He and Hazel loved baby-sitting for their grandchildren and great grandchildren. They also enjoyed long walks and drives together. Ren was truly the strong, silent type. He led by example, and was respected by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lucy Cook; brothers, Les and Bill Cook and his sons, Ervin Lane Cook and Mark Wallace Cook.

He is survived by Hazel Cook, his beloved wife for 58 years; his brother, Byron Cook and wife Lucy; Sisters, Dora Norton and Erma McPhie; Sons, Van Cook and wife Kathy, Monte Cook and wife Mary Lou; Daughter-in-law, Sue Cook; Grandchildren, Vance Cook, Yolynn St. John and husband Scott, Brandi Smith and husband Jeff, Nathan Cook and wife Jennifer, Miranda Cook and Aaron Cook; Great grandchildren, Bianca Cook, Colleen Cook, Vanessa Cook, Brooke Schafer, Bryce Schafer, Myranda St. John and Hunter Smith.

A visitation will be held at Chapel of the Ferns-Cooper Mortuary in Eureka on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Ocean View Cemetery in Eureka on Thursday, July 7, 2005 at 1 p.m. and a memorial service will be held at the First Covenant Church at 2526 J St. in Eureka on Thursday, July 7, 2005 at 2 p.m. A celebration of life will follow the service at the Peterson house next to the church.
