Burroughs, 112 Crestview Drive, was a teacher in the Appleton Public School System for 34 years. He was a biology teacher, but it was only a label, because he was a craftsman, an amateur artist, a leader in a number of community endeavors and a nice guy.
He was instrumental in organizing an advance biology class while at Appleton High School-East. But he also organized a class together with his wife Evelyn, a combination science-English class for those who has trouble coping with the subjects at Appleton High School-West. In Burroughs' book, no one was left out.
Science earned Burroughs his daily bread. He was actively connected with drama and theater both in the high school and the community. He operated stage at AHS-W for many years as head of the backstage crew. He organized and directed the activities of the Curtain Call Production organization. For years, he directed the commencement program each year at East, and was in charge of several Miss Appleton pageants. He wrote, produced and directed several benefit shows for the Welcome Wagon organization, dividing his time between his two loves - science and the stage.
When he died of a heart attack at his summer home on Ox Bow Lake, Presque Isle, he left behind his widow and a sister. There were no children, but in reality, there were hundreds who came to him for advice, for counseling, for a pat on the back. They came back year after year, and they were always remembered with warmth, caring and interest.
Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church. A memorial fund has been established.
