William was a son of Jonathan Brewer and Polly Hoag/Houge Standish and was a direct descendant of Myles Standish. He was a farmer and also owned the Woodville Hotel, located at the head of Canandaigua Lake. His brothers; Salem, John and Henry owned/operated the steam lake boats on the lake. William also ran a stage coach that ran between Woodville and Naples. The boat/coach schedules were such that travelers arriving in Woodville at the end of the day, found that the stage coach run had ended. The travelers would have to stay in his hotel.

Naples, N. Y. - William Russell Standish died on Wednesday, aged 69 years. He was born in and had been a resident of South Bristol most of his life. He was one of five sons of the late Brewer Standish. He leaves a wife and three sons, Frank, Robert and George, the latter being the capable pilot of the Ogarita. One daughter, Clara, died many years ago.

William married Love Holcomb, the sister of Julia Anne, who married William's brother, Salem.
