He was a Sergeant in the United States Army and a Paratrooper assigned to the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions during World War II.
He was the owner of a small construction company and built many homes in the Upper Marlboro area.
He also worked on construction of the DC Metro transit system.
He was a charter member and past Chief of the Brandywine Fire Department.
He enjoyed gardening, trap shooting, shooting pool, eating crabs, watching his grandsons play baseball and being with family.
Russell's passions in life were his wife of 59 years, Ida, who preceded him in death (2007), family and friends.
He is survived by his children, Gloria Trotter (Gary) of Greenville, SC; Phyllis Pruett (Dave) of Virginia Beach, VA; Rita McCumber (Gene) of Naylor, MD; Rusty Armiger (Karen) of Brandywine, MD; Susan Harmon (Mike) of Centreville, MD and Sandie Rice (David) of Brandywine, MD.
He had 10 grandchildren, Joey Ockershausen, Kent Pruett, Nichole Stivers, Laura Marano, Justin Armiger, Daniel Armiger, Emily Fenlon, Sara Armiger, David Rice and Bradley Harmon, and three great grandchildren, Nolan Pruett, Lillian Stivers and Blake Fenlon.
Family will receive friends for Russell's life celebration at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, Maryland 20622 on March 7, 2016 from 4-7 PM. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A. in Charlotte Hall, MD with Reverend James Chance officiating.
A Committal Service will be held at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 1 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Joey Ockershausen, Kent Pruett, Justin Armiger, Daniel Armiger, David Rice and Bradley Harmon.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Chesapeake.
