-------------------------
William was born about 1843 in Enzie, Banffshire, Scotland. He was the youngest of six children born to his parents, John and Helen (French) Barclay. His father died when William was a small child.
In his young adulthood, William worked on various farms in the area. In 1879, at the age of 36, he married Jessie Kissach. (Also spelled Kissack, Kessach and Kessack.) Jessie was ten years younger than he was, having been born in 1856 in the same general area around Keith. At that time, Jessie had a three year old daughter, Ann Watt, and a one year old son, William Cockburn.
By the time of the 1881 census, the family was living at the Muir of Holmie, Banffshire. William stated he was a crofter. In addition to Jessie, Ann and William, was a two month old baby boy, Thomas, who had been born February 9, 1881. Eight more children would be born in this family.
William and Jessie moved from the Muir of Holmie to Blairstone Cottage about 1936.
While several of the Barclay children decided to immigrate to Canada and America, they also remained close to their parents via letter-writing and the occasional trip home.
William Barclay died June 17, 1935, at Blairstone Cottage. The cause of death was given as senility. He was 93 years old!
After William’s death, Jessie appears to have gone to live with her daughter, Catherine “Katie” who had married George Halliday. They lived in Aberdeen, and George is the one who signed Jessie’s death certificate. The cause of death was listed as “Valvular Heart Disease, Cardiac Failure.” The date of her death was October 28, 1939. Both William and Jessie are buried in the Rathven churchyard.
There were two additional children in addition to those linked below. These both stayed in the U.K.
1. Penelope Barclay Fuller Fogden (1896-1975)
2. Robert George Barclay (1899-1979)
