From Illinois Muster Roll - John H. Anderson, age 21, 5'7" tall, brown hair, black eyes, light complexion, single, farmer, born Tennessee, residing St. Charles, Missouri. Enlisted 2 September 1864 at Alton, Illinois under Lt. Col. A. F. Rodgers. Mustered as a Private into Co. E 144th IL Infantry on 7 September 1864 at Alton, Illinois. Transferred to Co. D 144th IL Infantry on 20 December 1864. Mustered out of Co. D 144th IL Infantry by Captain Hall at Springfield, Illinois on 14 July 1865.


From marriage license issued 13 November 1877 at Pittsfield, Pike County, Illinois - John H Anderson of Detroit, Pike County, Illinois age 26 and Miss Martha Scott of Flint, Pike County, Illinois age 22, married 14 November 1877 by James Haywood, Justice of the Peace.


From the 1880 census of Chambersburg Township, Pike County, Illinois - John H Anderson, age 27, a farmer born in Scotland; his wife Martha F, age 23, keeping house, born Illinois; and son "Fredk", age 9 months, born September 1879 in Illinois. The "k" following "Fred" was raised and of smaller script, indicating the abbreviation of the more formal name Frederick. This entry was immediately followed by that of Taylor Scott, "Rossy" (Rosey) Scott, and Thomas W Scott, the siblings of Martha (Scott) Anderson.

From Pension index cards - Two pension cards show John H. Anderson of Co. D & E, 144th IL Infantry, died "1886" at Griggsville, Illinois. Widow pension applied for 22 Aug 1890 and granted but not named on those cards. A third pension card shows widow Martha F Anderson with Frank Caldwell as guardian of minor(s), with the minor pension applied for on 8 July 1892.

D, 144th IL Infantry, died April 1887 in Griggsville, IL, cemetery not specified. Fulfilled by Gross Bros. of Lee, Massachusetts. Note that John is buried in this cemetery near his in-laws, Thomas and Charity (Anderson) Scott.
