George Papes was born in Sannicolau Mare, Romania. He and his first wife Helen Sinitean had a daughter Alice Papes in 1915. In the early 1920's he operated a saloon in the 200 block of North Concord Street in South St. Paul, MN. He worked as a butcher at Armour & Company for many years. In 1922 George went back to Romania where he married Lena Vingan Opreanu; they had 5 children.
