Jeremiah moved from PA to Mansfield, Richland Co, Ohio in the fall of 1831 with his parents, one brother and four sisters. In the spring of the next year they bought a farm, the same on which he died. A sister, Eliza, died June 9,1840, and a brother Richard in July 1840, both of scarlet fever. His father died March 7, 1843, leaving his wife, son and daughter to Jeremiah's care.
Jeremiah united with the Lutheran church in April 1843. He was a deacon for 40 years. In May 1840 the first Sabbath school was organized with Jeremiah as superintendent, a position he held for many years. He was a member of the Bethlehem church for 50 years. A few years prior to his death he moved to Shelby and transferred his membership to the Lutheran Church of Shelby, of which church he remained a member to his death.
He married November 7, 1844, Catherine Flora. To them were born 11 children, 9 still living at the time of his death, in addition to his wife. His eldest sister died September 17, 1866, aged 56 years. His mother died January 28, 1877, aged 84 years. A brother died April 6, 1887, aged 57 years. Three sisters remain to mourn him, two in Williams County, and one in Richland County. When he removed to Shelby he still found work in the Sunday School. He taught a class of fathers and mothers, a very interesting class.
He died in terrible suffering, yet he was patient and steadfast in his faith.
