She was born December 18, 1920 in Madison County, N.C. Katherine was the fourth of seven children born to the late Holden M. and Mada Chambers Ledford. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Joe Shoemaker. Siblings preceding her in death are Louise Marshbanks, Harry Ledford, Roy Pender Ledford, and James Ledford.
Katherine was survived by her daughter, Sandra Shoemaker Natterer; son-in-law, Hans; granddaughter, Amanda; all of Charlottesville, Va.; siblings, Glenn Brookshire Ledford and his wife, Alma, of Asheville, N.C. and Herbert H. Ledford and his wife, Frieda, of Cooleemee, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
After graduating from high school, Katherine moved to Detroit, Mich., where she worked for the Ford Motor Company as part of the war effort. There she met Joe, her beloved husband. They moved back to Asheville, where the family joined West Asheville Baptist Church, and Katherine excelled at being a homemaker, wife and mother. She was a great cook, loved to garden and to have the family in to visit! Later she worked at a large department store where she received the top sales award for several years! After health problems, she and Joe moved to Charlottesville, Va., to be closer to their daughter's family. Katherine lived a full life made up of family, close friends and good neighbors. She was thankful until the end for these blessings.
Thanks go out to the staff at Morningside Assisted Living, where Katherine first lived in Va. and made new friends. For the last four years of her life she resided at Mountain View Nursing Home and was surrounded by the joy and peace of this wonderful place. The family will be forever grateful for all the love and support showered on us all by staff and by loyal friends and family through these years.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, 901 Aiken Rd, Asheville, NC 28804. Rev. Worth Emory officiated. Many thanks to Groce Funeral Home in Asheville for help in organizing. Also thanks to Hill and Wood in Charlottesville for their kind guidance.
