Francis is the son of John and Mary (Newton) Sweeney.

Siblings, including nicknames: James "Shark", Kathleen "Kak", Joseph "Syd", Charles "Elmer", Helen "Chris", John "Hickey", Harry "Hoover", Robert "Dick", Evelyn "Ussie

Spouse: Dorothy Hartsell

Their children: James, John, Thomas, Michael

Francis died at Lapeer County General Hospital, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Rosary was prayed Friday, Auguse 26, 1983, at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. His funeral was held at 10am, Saturday, August 27, 1983, at Church of Immaculate Conception, Lapeer, Fr Charles Goentges officiating.

Francis was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, American Legion Post 16, and Lapeer Country Club. He retired from GMC Truck & Coach, in 1968, and was presently employed by the Lapeer County Press newspaper.

Francis was an exemplary man who was loved by many. After serving in the U.S. Army, stationed in the Philippines, during WWII, he returned to his parents' home, on Lake Nepessing, Lapeer, where he remained until their deaths. Consequently, he was in his 40's before he married and had children. He enjoyed fishing and hunting coon with his Walker hounds.

The first sign that something was amiss with his health was difficulty swallowing. Esophageal cancer was the diagnosis. After surgery, he was hopeful that all was well, but cancer struck him again.

Before his death, according to Fr Goentges' sermon the day of his funeral, he visited the priest to ask several questions about eternity. He wanted to make sure he'd done what was necessary to enter heaven. Father, deeply impressed with his humility, sincerity and childlike desire to please God, assured him all was well between him and his Creator. It was difficult for those present to hold back the tears when Father related this.

Francis, always the perfect gentleman, wasn't one to criticize others or use indecent language. He and Army buddy, Art Scheff (see wedding portrait), whom he met during the war, remained lifetime friends. Both were of the same impeccable character.

"WE LOVED HIM IN LIFE; LET US NOT FORGET HIM IN DEATH."
