His second marriage was to Jane Daniel Swank on 19 July 1958 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Elmar died on 23 February 1974 of lung cancer. He was buried in Sunny Lane Cemetery in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Keyes was born in Texas and lived most of his life in Oklahoma City. He was retired from Evans Electric Co.
He is survived by his wife Margaret; three sons Jack and C. A., both of Los Angeles and Casey, Oklahoma City and two daughters Mrs Dolores Bodden, Port Arthur, Texas and Mrs Thelma Osborn, Wheatland, Calif; two brothers, Willie, Plainview, Tex and Robert, Aumsville, Ore and four sisters, Mrs Vera Berkshire, Salem, Ore., Mrs. Bessie Kendall, Eureka, Calif., Mrs Nova Blain, Mangum, and Mrs Naomi Higgingbottam, Boyce, La
