Teresa Agnes (Schwamberger) Hunter, 89, of rural LaMoille passed away peacefully at her home on Feb. 18, 2016, among family and her caregiver Lina.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday in Hurst Funeral Home, Ladd, and from 9 a.m. Saturday until the 10 a.m. Mass in St. Patrick Church, Arlington. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Arlington.

Mrs. Hunter was born Jan. 2, 1927, to Charles and Agnes (Cahill) Schwamberger in Truman, Minn. She married Daniel Hunter on Oct. 3, 1949, in St. Patrick Church, Arlington.

Teresa was a graduate of L-P-O Junior College and was a school teacher in the eastern Bureau County school system, specifically the rural schools. She spoke often of her many pleasant experiences as a teacher and the wonderful students she taught. Teresa took great pride in disseminating information and seeing her students achieve their educational potential. She spoke often of her memorable teaching experience at Berlin Center country school, Malden, in the 1940s. As a child, she attended this very school at the same time her older sister, Rita, was the school teacher.

Teresa was a staunch believer in educational attainment and was a gifted writer and oral history teller of her maternal and paternal families’ histories tracing back to when they emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland and Germany. She earned her Illinois real estate broker license in the 1970s and worked as an independent agent. Teresa also volunteered as a teacher at IVCC’s adult learning center receiving recognition for her community service from state Rep. Richard Mautino. She was a lady of fine refinement and cultivated in many areas of life, and she displayed a clever wit in explaining and analyzing things.

She enjoyed the outdoors and for 50 years planted and tended to her flower and vegetable gardens. Also dear to her were the many family picnics she hosted at the farm as well as quality time spent with her husband and children at Lake Geneva, Wis., and at the family pool on the farm with her husband, children and grandchildren. Teresa was a true matriarch and was deeply involved in the wellbeing of her children and grandchildren. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Arlington and the Altar and Rosary Society. Her faith as a Roman Catholic was very strong and she practiced her faith in prayer and at Mass. Teresa and Daniel loved dearly their caregiver of the past 18 months, Lina Kisieliene.

Teresa is survived by four sons: Daniel A. Hunter of Arlington, Robert Hunter of LaMoille, Kevin Hunter of Savannah, Ga., and David Hunter of West Brooklyn. Also surviving are her sister, Vivian Yaklish of La Salle; her son-in-law, Amador Gutierrez Jr. of Laredo, Texas; and a brother-in-law, James Hunter of Arlington; grandchildren, Ryan and Kevin Gutierrez of San Antonio, Texas; Justin and Adam Hunter, students at University of Illinois, and Elizabeth Hunter of Savannah, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her only daughter, Teresa Agnes Hunter-Gutierrez, formerly of Laredo, Texas, as well as her husband of 66 years, Daniel J. Hunter. Family members who preceded her were: her sister, Monica Dwyer, formerly of Arlington, in 2000; her brothers, Leo J. Schwamberger, formerly of La Salle, in 2006; Jerome Schwamberger, formerly of Arlington, in 2008 and Bernard Schwamberger, formerly of Arlington, in 2014; and her sister, Rita Graham, formerly of rural Marseilles, in 2016.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and her nephew, George C. Dwyer of Arlington.
