John Duncan was a son of James Duncan and Averilla "Ava" Shelton. He was married to Sarah "Sally" Miller on 12 August 1810 in Adair County, KY where they had 6 children. In about 1827,they relocated to Salisbury, Sangamon County, IL where 6 more children were born. Their children were: Elizabeth, Robert, Barbara, Anderson, Mary, Cynthia, Averilla, Arminda L., John, James, and Ellen Eliza.

According to the History of the Early Settlers of Sangamon County Illinois, John Duncan died in 1863 near Salisbury, IL.
