Dr. Calvin W. Balch was a successful physician at Greenville, IL until 1864, when he moved with his entire family, two wagons and five horses, to Edgerton, Kansas, arriving 4 Apr 1864. They traveled by wagon to St. Louis, and by steamboat, fourteen days, to Kansas. The Civil War was then being waged in the country through which they passed, and three-inch oak plank covered the pilot house of the boat to protect the pilot from bullets.
