Michelle graduated from Cony High School in 1992, University of Maine at Farmington with a BS in Social Science Secondary Education in 1995, a BS in English for grades 7-12, and received her Masters in Education, Literature, and Language Arts from New England College in 2011. She taught at Jefferson Village School from 1999 until December of 2014 at which time she retired due to her illness.
She lived her life with dignity, pride, and determination. She had a dynamite sense of humor and she inspired many people with her courage and her will to live her life to the fullest to the very end of her fight against her incurable cancer.
Michelle served as the Marshall for the 2012 MaineGeneral Walk for Hope and the Honorary Marshall in the 2014 walk where she won Top Team for inspiring over 100 registered walkers on her team, "C’est la Vie." She was a member of the Calumet Club of Augusta, ME.
ln 2013, Michelle was awarded the Golden Apple Award in recognition of her dedication to the intellectual and emotional growth of all her students. Her love for teaching and her students was obvious to everyone who knew her. Fortunate were the students who benefited from her caring.
Michelle was predeceased by her father, Ronald, in 2007. She is survived by her husband, David; their two children, Andrew who is eleven and Kathryn who is 7; as well as her mother, Helene, all of Whitefield; a sister, Erica (Duncan) McLennan and her husband, Adam of Waldorf, Maryland. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family would like to thank Dr. Julia Moukharskaya and the staff of the oncology unit at the Alfond Cancer Care Center, as well as Dr. Gene Cheng, and Dr. Robert Dohner for their excellent care.
ln lieu of flowers, as education was not only Michelle’s profession but her passion, donations may be made through GoFundMe campaign https://www.gofundme.com/michelleduncanshaw which will be used to offset the cost of future education for Michelle and David’s children.
