Alexander's parents were John Kennedy and Isobel Warse/Wards married 21 April 1754 in Canisbay, Caithness.

Alexander married Elizabeth (Elspet) Laird 8 Feb 1788 in Canisbay, Caithness, Scotland. He came to Burray from Stroma in 1802. He was a member of The Independent Church at that time. Soon after arriving in Burray he opened his home for religious services for many years.

He was baptized in 1811. The record of the Baptist Church, Burray, states "His mind prior to this date, having undergone a thorough change on the subject of Christian Baptism." He started the Burray Baptist Church with the help of Burray Lairds.

In 1840 the services moved from Alexander's home to the public school room. Next a chapel was built on one acre of land rented for 99 years from the Earl of Zetland for one shilling a year.
June 14th 1848 the Chapel had its first service with 18 persons attending.
By 1874 there were 81 members. A manse was built in 1882. The church closed in 1966.

Alexander was a kind and caring man who stood up for the Burray inhabitants against the laird of the island..

In the Baptist Church Records it states when he died it was like a young child going to sleep.
