This is a memorial to the memory of George Washington Harvey who was killed in battle at Stone River, TN. Jan. 1, 1863 and buried Unknown in the Stone River National Cemetery.

George Washington Harvey was born May 25, 1841 in Shelby Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He was born to Joseph Parnell and Mary Harvey. He was the eldest son in a family that included four brothers and five sisters plus two step brothers.
As a boy he and his sisters attended the common school in Ashbury, Shelby Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He was raised by his father in the trade to become a farmer. In 1856 his father sold his farm in said county and moved the family just across the county line to Badger Grove, White County, Indiana. It was here the family resided when President Lincoln called for volunteers to quill the succession of the Southern States.
The subject still having family relatives and friends in Tippecanoe County enlisted at the age of 20 into the newly form Company D of the 40 Indiana Infantry in November 1861. His Unit traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana were it was sworn in on December 31, 1861 for a three year enlistment. His Enlistment Papers state that he was 5 feet 5 inches in height with Blue Eyes, hair coloring being Sandy in color and his Complexion is reported as it being Dark.
George Washington Harvey was to see action with the Indiana 40th for one year. He fought at the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville and Stones River. On the morning of December 31, 1862 Company D took up their position between the toll-gate of the Murfreesboro Turnpike and the rail road tracks. Around 12:30 PM it is estimated Washington was killed in battle at Stones River. The Lafayette Journal reported the engagement with the caption, "Our Boys Held Their Position". Washington's name was listed amongst the dead in this same news article.

He was survived by his father; Joseph Pilham Harvey, brother; John Orr Harvey, sisters; Dorcas Harvey, Ellen Harvey, half brother; Joseph Edward Harvey, half sisters; Anna Eliza Leanna Harvey, Sarah Elizabeth Harvey and two step brothers; James Francis Marion Davis and John Davis. Preceding him in death was his mother; Mary Ward Harvey, a half brother; Francis Harvey, and a half sister Harriet Harvey.
