James Brant Brewer was born on February 19th, 1844, in Mercer county, Illinois, departed this life at his home in this city on March 15th, 1907, after an illness covering several months. In fact he had been failing for the past year.
In 1862 he enlisted in Company G. 102nd Illinois Infantry and served his country faithfully and well for three years.
He was married to Louisa Wallace in Wappelo County, Iowa, May 23d, 1967. Nine children were born to his union, six of who are living; Mrs. Olive Dee of San Diego, California; Mrs. Lillie Walker of Junction City, Kansas; Mrs. Viola Sexton of Granite City, Illinois; Mrs. May Cook of Granton, Oklahoma; James H. and I. N. Brewer of Granton.
The two sons and the daughter living at Granton, Oklahoma, were the only children at the funeral.
Grandpa Brewer moved from Illinois to Iowa in 1888 and settled in Mills county, and moved with his family to Kay county, Oklahoma, in 1893; came to Woods county, Oklahoma, in 1900, and filed on a homestead. He proved that up a couple of years ago and then moved to Cleo, where he ended his days on last Friday.
He united with the Methodist church in 1872 and lived a consistant christian life up to his death.
He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and it was his dying wish that his beloved order officiate at his funeral, a wish that was carried out.
The funeral was held at the Methodist church on Sunday, March 17th, at 2 p.m. and a touching sermon was delivered by Rev. J. H. Clarke and the remains were deposited in the Cleo cemetery east of town, the Odd Fellows performing the last sad rites at the grave.
Grandpa Brewer was a good citizen and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.
He was honorable in every particular and his death removes a valuable citizen.
We join a comunity of sincere friends in extending heartfelt sympathy to that wife, the companion of his youth, and to his four daughters and two sons.
