GASTON--Byron Long, 78, a lifelong Delaware County resident, died Friday in his home after an extended illness. He was born in Delaware County, attended Royerton schools and spent his entire life in this area.
Mr. Long, R.R. 1, Gaston, worked for several years at Ball State University before retiring in 1971. He earlier worked at Knotts Implement Co. He attended Gaston United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Irene Kirtley Long; a son, Carl R. Long, Gaston; two daughters, Rosemary (Mrs. Eugene) Reed, Alexandria, and Regina (Mrs. Larry Thomas) Edwards, Gaston; a stepson, Charles Kirtley, Gaston; a sister, Mary (Mrs. Marshall) Crabill, Muncie; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren, and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Meeks Mortuary, Rev. Gary Hall, pastor of Gaston United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Jones Cemetery. Calling is 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary or before services Monday.
