Obituary for William Allenson
William Allenson, Professor Emeritus, Art Studio Department, SUNY New Paltz died at age 92. Raised in Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, he was pre-deceased by his parents Bertha and Samuel Allenson, his brother, Morton, who died in World War II, and his sister, Janeth. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne.

Bill's life trajectory started early when as a child he decided he wanted to be an industrial designer. At age 17 he enlisted in the Army Air Force serving his country for four years during WWII as a flight engineer. As he joked, he never left the US, but, was sent to various technical training programs. Ever grateful for the GI Bill, he was able to attend Champlain College to study engineering and the Philadelphia Museum School and the University of Pennsylvania to complete a BFA in Industrial Design. Upon graduating, he spent several years in NYC working for such well known designers as Raymond Loewe.
Restless, this was followed by receiving an American Scandinavian Fellowship to study furniture design with renown Danish designers. His work was shown at the Den Permanente in Copenhagen. After five years in Europe, working, studying and traveling, he returned home. With friends, he went into business designing furniture and receiving recognition for his work.
In 1963, he received an academic appointment to the Art Studio Department at SUNY New Paltz. During this time he created the BFA in Wood Design major. He always said it was his dream job. He loved the interaction with his students and it is where he met his wife of 47 years, Yvonne.
Shortly before Bill's death he said: "Is this a great life, or what!" It was a great adventure from birth to death.
Burial is private. Memorial donations may be sent to The William Allenson Scholarship Fund , The College at New Paltz Foundation. Inc. 1 Hawk Drive, New Paltz, N.Y. 12561
