English colonist and one of the founders of Massachusetts. He was the grandson of Archdeacon Robert Johnson, the founder of Oakham and Uppingham Schools. He was the largest shareholder of the Massachusetts Bay Company and was one of the twelve men to sign the Cambridge Agreement. He sailed to America in April, 1630, with the Winthrop Fleet of 14 ships, arriving at Salem on June 12. The initial settlement was at Charlestown, but due to the lack of a dependable source of water, the settlement was moved to Boston, which was settled under Johnson's supervision. He was the richest man in the colony at his death. His wife was Arbella, daughter of Thomas Clinton, 3rd Earl of Lincoln. She died at Salem in August 1630, leaving no children.
Baptized 1601, Stamford, Lincolnshire, son of Abraham and Anne (Meadows) Johnson (day and month of baptism not given). Puritan adventurer from Sempringham, Lincolnshire who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1630 in the "Arbella."
First settled in Charlestown; moved to Boston in 1630. Died in Boston 30 September 1630.
Married by license dated 5 April 1623 Lady Arbella Fynes [Fiennes], aged 22, daughter of Thomas, third Earl of Lincoln; she died Salem in August 1630.
No children recorded.
Isaac Johnson was distantly related by marriage to ROGER CONANT. Known Johnson servants at Nahant Neck (later part of Lynn) were WILLIAM DIXEY {1629, Nahant} & Edward IRESON {1629, Nahant}. Another Johnson servant JOHN RAVENSDALE {1629, Nahant} does not appear in New England records until early 1635, but he had probably arrived in 1629 or 1630.
