"Grandad"
Our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2014. He was born on July 30, 1917 to Howard J. and Mabel Fredericksen McKean in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was educated in the Salt Lake City schools and attended the University of Utah School of Engineering. Richard and Maurine Garrard were married and sealed by President David O. McKay in the Salt Lake Temple on October 16, 1941. Together they raised, guided, and supported their children. As a young man he worked in construction with his father and continued in that field for many years developing McKean Construction Co.
Richard served in the Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific area in World War II. After his service he returned home to family, work and sports; excelling in softball, tennis and golf.
He deeply loved God and temple work and served as a bishop, then later as a counselor and sealer in the Jordan River Temple Presidency. He valiantly served over fifty years in the temple.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Maurine; daughter, Dixie Cannon; sister, Helen Gritton (Earl). He is survived by his daughter, Karen Springer (Donald); daughter, Kathleen McNeil (Scott); son, Brian; son-in-law, Joseph Cannon; 19 grandchildren; and 53 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Murray 24th Ward Chapel, 755 East Three Fountains Drive, Murray, Utah. Friends may visit with the family at the ward prior to the funeral from 10:30-12:30. Interment will be at the Salt Lake Cemetery, 4th Avenue "N" Street.
