Southwest Harbor - Mary L. Worcester, 93, died peacefully February 13, 2016 at her home on Robinson Hill. Mary was born October 25, 1922 in Denley, NY the daughter of James Patrick and Martina Beatrice (Harriman) O’Brien.

The family moved between the family farm in Denley and Hall Quarry thru her younger years. She graduated from high school in Somesville and later waitressed in Southwest Harbor where she met Donald Worcester. They were married in 1945 and spent 65 wonderful years together. From 1959, when Don and Mary purchased Sawyer’s Market until the late 90’s, Mary was the voice on the phone and the bookkeeper in the little office at the store. After retiring, Don and Mary spent many enjoyable hours sitting together on the porch watching the birds. They especially enjoyed visits from their children and grandchildren. Since Don’s death in 2011, Mary continued her avid bird watching and looked forward to family visiting. A quiet, caring woman, Mary wanted for little except her children to be happy.

She is survived by her four children, Shirley Dyer of Hampden, Brian and Bettye Worcester of Southwest Harbor, Carol and Tom MacRae of Pretty Marsh, and Scott and Jennifer Worcester of Southwest Harbor; four grandchildren, Amanda Crafts and husband Duncan Bowen, Sethany Crafts, Garric Worcester, and Hannah Worcester; one great-grandson, Sawyer Worcester.

She was predeceased by her husband; sisters, Catherine Reed and Anna Hartford and husband Lester.

There will be a graveside service in the spring.

Contributions in Mary’s memory may be made to the Searles Scholarship Fund, c/o The First National Bank, P O Box 258, Bar Harbor 04609 or the Southwest Harbor Library, P O Box 157, Southwest Harbor 04679 (Bangor Daily News 2/16/2016 and Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home)
