The son of John Quincy & Elizabeth Frances (Ebberts) Adams, in 1860 he was a blacksmith living in Beale Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes. He married Catherine A. Buck April 23, 1861, and fathered Samuel Jacob Lincoln (b. 07/05/62), Ellen Rebecca (b. 08/18/66 - married John Jessie Radcliffe), William Harrison (b. 02/27/68), Mary Lavanda (b. 09/26/70), and John Franklin (b. 04/13/72).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-two in Harrisburg October 8, 1862, and mustered into federal service there October 29 as a private with Co. L, 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry (161st Pennsylvania). Promoted to corporal June 1, 1865, he honorably discharged with his company July 24, 1865.

He allegedly died in Shamokin, Northumberland County, but that is questionable. No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive that would pinpoint his death location.
