James Hubert "Chief" Childers, 80, of Marietta, died February 9, 2016. Funeral services at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Nugent and Rev. Greg Butler officiating. Burial was at Sandy Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Childers was born March 30, 1935 in Murray County, GA. He played guitar from the time he was 5 years old and was voted most talented at Murray County High School. He retired from Lockheed in 1997 where he worked in quality assurance for 43 years. He was a member of Kennesaw Lodge #33 F&AM; He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Atlanta; Yaarab Temple Shrine; and the Entertainers Unit. Over the years he played in several bands including The Swinging Gentlemen on WPLO radio in Atlanta, and the Georgia Mountain Fair Staff Band in Hiawassee, Georgia where he played for over 50 years. He is a member of the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame where he is recognized individually and as a member of the Georgia Mountain Fair Staff Band and the Swinging Gentlemen Band. He is also a lifetime member of American Federation of Musicians. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Mr. Childers is preceded in death by his parents Starling Houston Childers and Willie Childers; brother Houston Childers Jr.; and nephew Tim Childers. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Shirley Tucker Childers; daughter Cynthia Childers Wood, of Hiawassee; grandchildren, Jamison Wood and Jacey Wood; and several nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.
