Husband of Elizabeth Shuster, father of Hattie May, Vesta Ann, Mary Catherine, Lucy Darmas, Joseph Jasper & George William, son of William & Mary (Johnson) Barnhart.

Jasper was a member of the GAR Buell Post #1 and spent his entire life in Washington County around the Lowell area. His son Joseph died in France during WW I from disease and is buried overseas.

He enlisted as a Private on July 5, 1863 at the age of 18 in Company C, 4th Cavalry Regiment Ohio. Mustered out on March 12, 1864.

Re-enlisted as a Private on September 5, 1864 at the age of 19 in Company D, 174th Infantry Regiment Ohio. Mustered out on June 28, 1865 in Charlotte, NC.

4th Independent Volunteer Calvary - Battles in which he fought:
CHICKAMAUGA, TN, Sept. 19-23, 1863.
MIDDLETON, TN., May 21, 1863.
CLEVELAND, TN., Nov. 27, 1863.

Injured at the battle of Overall Creek TN, Dec. 4-15, 1864 - receiving an injury to the right arm (gun firing and grapeshot shattering his arm & shoulder.)
