State of Indiana
Monroe County Monroe Circuit Court, June Term 1908

In the matter of the estate of Richard A. Fulk, deceased, T. N. Sudberry, executor.

I, Lulu B. Smith, being duly sworn on my oath say that I am the daughter of Richard A. Fulk, deceased, and further state that as I am informed and believe Robert C. Fulk, referred to in the last will of my father, is now twenty-five years of age and has for some time shown a disposition to labor and take care of his money and has shown a capacity to keep and take care of any money or thing of value which might come to him from my father's estate and I hereby ask and request that T. N. Sudberry, the executor of my father's will, pay over to said Robert C. Fulk what sum may be due him under the terms of my father's will and hereby acknowledge myself estopped to ever claim any part of the estate which might have come to me under the terms of said will in case said Robert C. Fulk had not come up to the conditions imposed in said will or had not shown a capacity to keep and take care of whatever might come to him by the terms of said will.

[Note: This issue was an anniversary edition and was quite lengthier than most editions. The article concerned the early Monroe courts and the men who served in them. Although all the information was in one article, it is being separated herein into subsequent parts.]

Richard A. Fulk, state senator, was born on the 11th day of August 1833 in Indian Creek Township, Monroe County, Indiana. His parents are both dead. The first name of his father was Adam, that of his mother was Elizabeth. There were seven children in the family, four boys and three girls. His mother died in 1859 and his father in 1851. He went to subscription schools taught by Thomas J. Carmichael and to one taught by Jacob Young. He lived with his father until 1850. In 1847 his father removed to Jasper County, Missouri, returning to Indian Creek Township, Monroe County, in 1850, young Richard accompanying him. He commenced working for Peter Carmichael on the first day of January 1851 until July 1852, and from July to October of that year he worked for Sutherland & Jones hauling goods from Juliet, Ill., to this city. Then on the 15th of October 1852 he commenced work at the carpenter's trade for Jacob Graybeal on Hebron Church, Indian Creek Township. He was married in Smithville on the 23rd of January 1855 to Mary Helton and was elected justice of the peace in April of the same year. On the 1st day of April 1857 he moved to this city where he has since resided. He was elected sheriff in 1870 when he took charge of the auditor's office of the county having been elected thereto the previous year. He was elected state senator from the counties of Bartholomew, Brown and Monroe in 1890. His law partners have been respectively W. A. Foland, J. B. Mulky and Edwin Corr, his present partner. He has been through all the chairs in subordinate and encampment lodges in Odd Fellowship and is one of the elders in the Christian Church. Senator Fulk is a ready talker and is an excellent campaign speaker. He knows nearly everybody in the county and this acquaintanceship is a great aid in his large law practice.
