Died in Iola, January 26th, 1916, Mrs. Harriett Strickland Ouart, aged 63, of lagrippe.

Harriet, daughter of Selden and Jane Strickland was born near Jacksonville, Ills.

In 1861 her parents removed with her to Allen county, Kansas and settled on a farm on Deer creek.

At that time there were no houses between their home and the little village of Iola. With the exception of a few farms along the creeks all was unbroken prairie.

During the first year of their residence on the farm her oldest brother, Henry, a soldier in Company H. 9th Kansas Cavalry, died. His death was soon followed by that of her father, and so many difficult tasks devolved on the young girl as she grew to womanhood.

She met the bitter privations of pioneer life with tireless industry and unfaltering courage. She was one of the brave little army of pioneer woman who unassuming virtures and faithful endurance of hardships have helped to transform Kansas from a wilderness to a land of comfortable homes.

On May 8, 1916, [sic -May 23, 1880] she was married to John F. Ouart, and for a few years they lived on their farm in Meade county, Kansas, but later returned to her old home, to live with her aged mother, caring for her with tenderest devotion for many years. After her mother's death she moved to Iola, where she has since resided. Her cheerful spirit and unselfish nature endeared her to all, and her family have the sympathy of the community in their beravement.

But, though we mourn let us not think of her as dead, but as one who has passed beyond our present vision, we cannot see her now -- but by following the "Kindly Light" which cheered her earthly life, we shall again be in her beloved presence in that haven of rest.

She leaves, besides her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Ada Freeman, and tow sons, Clifton J. Ouart, of Atlantic Iowa, and Selden Oaurt, Iola, and a sister, Mrs. M.S. Henderson of Kincaid, Kansas and a brother T.F. Strickland of Iola.

The funeral servicws were conducted by Rev. Zook and Rev. Funston. Interment was made at Highland cemetery.
