He was the son of John Thomas THROCKMORTON and Emilia (nee YOUNG).

By 1845 he had married Virginia Jane (nee BOGGS), widow of Samuel HOLCOMB, Sr.

In 1864 he was drafted during the American Civil War at age 41 and served as a Private in Company A, 1st Regiment of the West Virginia Light Artillery, Union Army. His last child Herbert A. MORTON received his father's Civil War medal in 1984 (reference: 12 Nov 1984 Charleston Gazette).

On 27 Oct 1864 in Clay County, West Virginia he married his second wife,
Julia Mary RODGERS.

He stood six feet tall, was left handed, and could function as a blacksmith, gunsmith, expert marksman, surveyor and carpenter who helped build the church at Lisemores.

On 2 September 1865 he received an Exhorter's License as a Methodist Episcopal Minister. He was an inspired and powerful preacher, who sometimes preached in his bare feet.

On 9 Dec 1875 in Fayette County, West Virginia he married his third wife,
Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" RYAN

On 23 Apr 1885 in Clay County, West Virginia, he married his fourth wife,
Julia Ann HOLCOMB.
