LINDSAY — Norman W. Kurtenbach, 94, of Lindsay, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at Boone County Health Center in Albion.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lindsay with Fr. James F. Novotny and Deacon Joe Kurtenbach officiating. Interment will be in Holy Family Cemetery, with a military graveside ceremony by the Lindsay American Legion Post and National Guard Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday with a 7 p.m. Scripture and rosary service and 9-10 a.m. Monday, all at the church.

Norman was born Sept. 21, 1921, in the St. Mary’s community near Humphrey, the son of William J. and Helen (Schaecher) Kurtenbach. He graduated from Lindsay Holy Family School in 1939. On April 10, 1945, Norman and Mary Ann Braun were united in marriage in Cedar Rapids.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1942, serving with the Signal Corps and was honorably discharged in April 1946 at the rank of second lieutenant. They farmed in Iowa and Nebraska until 1981 and retired in Lindsay.

Norman was a member of Holy Family Church, a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus of the Columbus Assembly and lifetime member of Lindsay American Legion Post 261 and VFW Post 3704 of Columbus. He served five years as chairman of Platte County Selective Service and 23 years as chairman of Platte County Weed Control Authority.

He enjoyed walking, playing harmonica, traveling, supporting Holy Family Church, the Right to Life and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his children and their spouses, Mary and Ray Micek of Grand Island, Daniel and Theresa Kurtenbach of Hagerstown, Maryland, Jean Kurtenbach of Lindsay, Kenneth and Debra Kurtenbach of Lindsay, Charles and Cheri Kurtenbach of Columbus, Theodore Kurtenbach of Omaha, Denise and Don Hemmer of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Steven Kurtenbach of Omaha and Karen and Vic Schmeiser of Broomfield, Colorado; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Bernice and “Whitey” Arlt and Charlotte Staroscik, both of Columbus, Ed and Connie Kurtenbach of Ojai, California, and Joe of Ava, Missouri; and sisters-in-law, Arlene Kurtenbach, Joan Kurtenbach and Marge Kurtenbach.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ann of 48 years on Oct. 8, 1992; daughter, Anne; son, Richard; daughter-in-law, Frances Kurtenbach; brothers, Irvin, Vernon, John and William; and sister, Germaine Luebe.
