ROCKWELL - Dr. Vincent J. Adams, 83, of 204 Main St. in Rockwell, died on Saturday (June 6, 2009)at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 417 Sixth Ave. in DeWitt, with the Rev. H. Robert Harness officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in DeWitt.

A visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St. in Rockwell and again one hour prior to the service at the church in DeWitt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association American Diabetes Association, Hospice of North Iowa, Iowa Public Radio, the Rockwell-Swaledale EMT's, the Rockwell Public Library or to the Swaledale Public Library.

Vince was born on Aug. 23, 1925, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Frank and Mary (Seamer) Adams. After graduating from high school, he enlisted at the age of 17 in the U.S. Navy. He served as Quartermaster 2nd Class aboard the USS Kenneth Whiting for three years during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he attended St. Ambrose University and the University of Iowa.

Vince was united in marriage to Milly (Johnson) on Aug. 20, 1949, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. They moved to North Platte, Neb., where Vince taught high school science.

He decided to change careers and attended Creighton University, pursuing his medical degree. In 1960, Dr. Adams established his medical practice in Rockwell. He served the surrounding communities for 40 years.

Dr. Adams was past president of the Mercy Hospital Medical Staff and a Mercy Hospital Divisional Board member. He was Medical Director and co-founder of the Rockwell-Swaledale EMT's. He was involved with the American Legion and Lion's Club. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell.

He had many interests, which included watercolor painting and baking breads. He was an avid reader and especially enjoyed Civil War and history books. Fishing was a favorite pastime, especially the trips to Canada.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Milly in 1999; infant son, Mitchell; son-in-law, Terry Wedmore; parents, Frank and Mary; and brother, Francis Adams.

Those left to honor his memory include four daughters and four sons, Marsha (Terry) Wedmore, Mary Ellen (Gary) Haugen, Michele (Rick) Brehm, Margaret Mary (John) Cunningham, Mike (Sue) Adams, Mark (Mary) Adams, Marty (Susan) Adams and Murray Adams; grandchildren, Amber Wilson, Abbey Pitzenberger, Adam Wedmore, Kimberley and Andy Brehm, Josh Cunningham, Nate and Paul Adams, Madison and Mitchell Adams, and Ty, Brett and Ned Adams; and great-grandchildren, Allison and Caitlin Pitzenberger, Owen Wedmore and Tarren and Kiara Cunningham.
