C. Arlene (Ake) Brubaker, 92, a resident of Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of South Mulberry Street, Martinsburg, went home to be with the Lord Sunday afternoon following a brief illness.


She was born in Martinsburg, daughter of the late Charles H. Sr. and Bertha M. (Replogle) Ake. She married Wilbur T. "Bill" Brubaker on Feb. 14, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 2003.

Surviving are a son, Alan A. (Cindy) of Warriors Mark; a daughter, Betsy B. Lehner (Lawrence) of York; four grandchildren: Douglas and Christopher Brubaker and Seth and Kyle Lehner; and nine great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by two brothers: Charles Jr. and Denver K.

Arlene was a 1940 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg, and a 1942 graduate of Altoona School of Commerce. She had worked at Martinsburg Shoe Factory and Pennsylvania Shoe Co., Altoona, from 1952-77.

She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, as well as Women of the ELCA. She was also a member of Martinsburg Boosters Club, Martinsburg Ladies Bridge Club, Tennis Board of the Morrisons Cove Memorial Park and the Altoona Symphony League.

She enjoyed volunteering at Homewood at Martinsburg, traveling, genealogy and taking cruises with her daughter. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling with her husband to their home in Florida, where they spent their winters and made many friends.

Arlene was a direct descendant of Jacob Ake, who founded the town of Williamsburg, which he named after his son, William.

Friends will be received from 1 until the 2 p.m. memorial service Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at the Homewood at Martinsburg Chapel, Pastor Ed Harshbarger and Pastor Judith Simonson officiating. Inurnment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family prefers memorial contributions be given to Martinsburg Community Library or St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg.
