VETERAN NURSING FIGURE,
MABEL (EAGER) BARNARD, DIES

Mabel Alice (Eager) Barnard, 91, of 239 E. South Temple, the oldest graduate nurse of St. Mark’s School of Nursing, died July 23, 1972 of natural causes at a local hospital.

Mrs. Barnard was one of seven to graduate from the St. Mark’s School of Nursing in 1902. Later she became night superintendent and surgical nurse at St. Mark’s Hospital. She was the first nurse to assist in a surgical operation at LDS Hospital. She set up the Budge Hospital (now Logan LDS Hospital) School of Nursing in Logan.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and past president of the Children’s Service Society.

Mrs. Barnard was born April 10, 1881, in Winsted, Conn., daughter of Nahum and Ellen (Bartlett) Eager. She was married to Dr. David Luther Barnard June 3, 1909 in Salt Lake City. He died May 19, 1934.

She is survived by a son and a daughter, David L. Barnard of Las Vegas, and Mrs. Alice (Barnard) Franks of Michigan City, Indiana; son-in-law Ralph W. Johnston, Ogden, UT., and daughter-in-law Jeanne (Jones) Barnard of Ely, NV; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call at 574 E 1st South, Wednesday, 2-4 p.m.
