DONALD PAUL BURTNER, 83
WINTER HAVEN - Mr. Donald Paul Burtner, age 83, died Saturday, January 23, 2010 from complications in a fall.
He was born on February 2, 1926 in Natrona Heights, PA and moved to Winter Haven from Pittsburgh, PA in 1985.
Donald was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Lake Region Scottish Rite and Winter Haven Shrine Club. He was a US Navy veteran, having served in the South Pacific during WWII. Donald had been a Crafton, PA Volunteer Fireman, was a member of the American Legion and Spirit Lake Community Church.
Donald dearly loved his wife and daily showed her that eternal love. He delighted in children, whether his families' or those he met through Shrine activities. His joy in life was helping others. He will be remembered by his grand and great grandchildren for the years they spent swimming with their "Pappy". Also, by his swimming buddies for the many hours he spent daily at the pool at Oakwood Estates to ease his arthritis.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Burtner of San Francisco, CA.
Donald is survived by his wife, Bernice Neely Burtner, of Winter Haven; son, Andrew (Judy) Burtner of Chandler, AZ; daughter, Linda Burtner of Harmony, PA; stepsons, Robert (Rebecca) Neely and William Neely all of Pittsburgh, PA; stepdaughter, Susan (Mark Stephens) Neely of Lakeland; sister, Georganne Craig of Indianapolis, IN; brother, Kenneth Burtner of Portersville, PA; 8 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Spirit Lake Community Church, 2600 Spirit Lake Road, Winter Haven, Florida 33880. Inurnment will be on Saturday with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607.
