Jake Hill was born in McNairy or Hardeman County, Tennessee, and came as an infant to Comanche County in a wagon train along with his parents, other family, and friends in 1878. He was a man of adventure and left the family farm and joined the Alaskan Gold Rush in 1898 - 1899. He worked for the Ventura Mining Company, and traveled in several western states including Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, and to Brazil and Venezuela with his occupation as an oil worker, sometimes taking his wife and daughter with him. He married Jessie Roberson and their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1917. He is buried beside his brother P.G. Hill and their parents, James A. and Lucinda 'Parolee' Godwin Hill, in Oakwood Cemetery in Comanche, Texas.
