Obence "Ben" Perez was born on November 30, 1942 in Goliad, Texas to Macario and Maria Eusebia Perez. Ben entered his eternal rest on January 27, 2016, at the age of 73 at his home in Needville surrounded by his loved ones.
Ben is preceded in death by his parents, Macario and Maria Eusebia, his brothers, Bernardino "Benny" Perez, Juan "John" Perez, and sister, Lillie Perez Pardo.
Ben is survived by his son, Vaughn Eric of Needville and daughter, Valarie Campos and husband, Ricardo, along with his three beloved grandsons, Ethan, Michael, and Gabriel Campos of Floresville. He is also survived by his brother, George and wife, Susana of Katy, sisters, Seferina "Fina" Rios and husband, Roy of Needville, Dolores Monroy and husband, Ricardo of Beasley, and Sofia Rodriguez of Needville along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Ben moved to the Village of Pleak in 1955 and then to Needville in 1965, where he would eventually raise his family. Ben served in the United States Army as a Corpsman from 1964-1966. He then was hired as a male aide at Polly Ryon Hospital and began LVN school at Polly Ryon, five years later. Later he would attend Alvin Community College to obtain his Registered Nursing degree.
After becoming an RN worked at the Polly Ryon Emergency Room for 28 years as manager/supervisor up until his retirement in 1994. He then set out to create Gentle Hand Home Health Care with his then spouse, Vangie.
He was a longtime member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Needville, where he took pride in being a member of the Needville Knights of Columbus - 4th Degree Knight, serving as Faithful Navigator and Commander; longtime member of the Needville Lion's Club; member of the Texas League of Vocational Nurses and Texas Nurses Organization. He also served as Needville City Councilman from 1979-1984, and was one of the Board of Directors for the Senior Citizens Center. Ben also took time volunteering for the local Boy Scouts and was a 4-H Archery project leader.
Along with being an active community leader, he enjoyed traveling across the U.S. as well as abroad. Adventures included trips to Spain. His favorite trip was his Alaskan cruise with his children and grandchildren. He loved exploring his native American heritage and love to collect Native American art and jewelry, as well as dressing in full regalia to perform at Powwows in New Mexico, Oklahoma and around Texas. One of his proudest moments was participating in the processional and opening of the Native American Museum at the Smithsonian. Ben enjoyed taking his grandsons fishing and working in his beautiful backyard and water garden babying his Koi.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 31, 2016 in the Chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg.
The funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 1, 2016 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Needville. Interment, with full military honors, will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg.
