Isabel Hughes was Baptized as a baby, at the Heppner Episcopal Church, in the presents of God, the congregation and her parents.

Her family moved to Portland soon after the death of her little sister, Constance Hughes, in 1901. Her sister had needed an operation to remove her appendix and traveled to Portland to find the best possible hospital care at Saint Vincent. Death quickly followed the operation. It all happened with her parent's away visiting in England.

In 1904, the Sisters of St. John Baptist came from New York to take over as directors of St. Helen's Hall. Operated as a private school by the Episcopal Church. The school opened it's doors in the 1870's and taught grades 1-12. It quickly earned a reputation of offering a high quality education and spirit filled institution. Isabel was sent here and gained a high quality education.

In 1913, Isabella, 27, traveled to England, and possibly to Ireland, to see where her parents were born and to meet family still living there. From Liverpool, England she came back home aboard the S.S. Carmania and landed in New York harbor.

Miss Isabel Hughes and Mr. William Whitfield were married in Portland, Oregon, on 20 March 1916, at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. Her husband was born in Berkshire, England, 26 Dec 1882. He had extended family living in Berkshire. He immigrated with his parent's to America when about 14 years old.

During WWI, her husband went overseas as a Army Officer in charge of dispersing over $150,000,000, in direct support of America's war effort.

In 1918, William and Isabel were living in College Park, Maryland. It was there that her husband filed for his naturalization papers to the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia. At that time he was an accountant with the Accounting Detachment, Engineer Corps, U. S. Army.

In 1919, Isabel gave birth to a son, William Hughes Whitfield, in Portland, Oregon.

In 1923, Isabel gave birth to a daughter, Frances H. Whitfield, in Portland, Oregon.

Her son, Staff Sergeant William H. Whitfield was killed on 18 Dec 1942, while serving in Alaska during WWII.

In 1952, they lived at 2725 N.E. 34th Ave, Portland, Oregon. That year they traveled aboard the S. S. Caronia. Leaving, Southampton, England and arriving back in New York, on 08 Aug 1952.

Her husband was born in Berkshire, England on 26 Sept 1882. He immigrated to the United States in 1906, at the age of 14, from England. He was an a very accomplished accountant and operated several sizable businesses in Portland.

Together they served their community in many capacities. such as providing leadership in the Boys and Girls Clubs, and in their Church. Using their wealth to help others better their lives was important to them. In this way God had blessed their lived.

Her loving husband, William, died in their Portland home, on 20 Mar 1960.
