John D. "Duke" Campbell was born 28 Dec 1779, of unknown parents, in Selkirkshire, Scotland, which is about 50 miles south of Edinburgh. He married Margaret Lockie, also of unknown parents, on 13 May 1804 in Yarrow, Selkirk, Scotland. The baptismal records of their first four children show they were also born in Yarrow. Son, James Campbell's obituary indicated he was born in Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland. The "History of Galt and Drumfries" states that "John D. Campbell, long familiarly known as "Duke" Campbell" arrived in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, in 1825. The 1852 census shows Duke living with his wife, on the "Campbell Homestead," passing down the James C. Campbell family and still standing today. Duke died 7 Oct 1861 in Glen Morris, Ontario, not far from Dumfries.
The Campbell family in Canada thought that John got the nickname "Duke" from entertaining a Duke in Scotland once. There is an indication in printed church history that he was given the nickname was derived from John Campbell, the 7th Duke of Argyll, who was Governor General of Canada. The name perpetuated at least to his grandson, son of George, John Duke Campbell.
