The son of German-born Philip & Maria Snyder, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Cumberland Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Gettysburg June 23, 1863, as a private with Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa). He re-enlisted in Chambersburg February 9, 1864, mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with the three-year organization of Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.
He married Harriet Biesecker in 1866 and fathered Anna C. (b. 1866 - married John Crouse), Mary (b. @1866 - married John W. Hoofnagle), Elizabeth (b. ? - married a Crouse), John P. (b. @1872), Fannie (b. 02/22/74 - married Heber Brenizer), and Laura (b. @1877 - married a Haley). Cause of death is listed as "myocarditis, chronic" with "senility" a contributing factor.
