Laura Irene Lutz Roberts, 87, a longtime resident of the Conyngham-Drums Valley, who resided at St. Luke Manor, Hazleton, for the past eight years, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at the Manor while surrounded by her family.

Born Feb. 28, 1928, in Wapwallopen, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Helen G. (Fuehrer) Whitebread and spent her early years in Wapwallopen before moving to Conyngham and then Drums, spending the past 65 years in the valley area.

For several years she was employed by Geisler’s Knitting Mill on Green Street in Hazleton, and spent most of her working years as a presser and sewing machine operator in local garment factories. She also was employed as a school bus driver for the Conyngham valley where she was proud of the distinction of being one of the first woman drivers.

Laura was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, the PA Federation of Bible Classes, the Senior Citizens of Drums and was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Butler Fire Company. She enjoyed Word Finds, making calendars and glass ornaments, bingo and staying busy with various crafts.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, James Roberts; brother, William L. Whitebread; son, Arnold W. Lutz; and stepson, Walter Roberts.

Surviving are her daughters: Bonnie Whitebread of Drums; and Helen James and her husband, Robert, of Drums; grandson, Jason James, of Drums; two great-grandchildren: and daughter-in-law, Carol Lutz, of Bloomsburg. Also surviving are stepdaughter, Donna Roberts, of Drums; step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; sister, Fern Jean Smith, and her husband, the Rev. Larry, of Berwick; aunt, Carrie Fuehrer; niece, Brenda Troy, and her husband, Robert, of Huntington Mills; and several other nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Thursday at 5 p.m. from the Butler Chapel of Krapf and Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 530 West Butler Drive, Drums. The Rev. Larry Smith will preside. Friends may call at the Butler Chapel on Thursday from 4 p.m. until time of service.
