John A. Acierno, 85, of Sawtown Road, Oil City, died early morning Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, in his home. Born on Nov. 19, 1917 in Smethport, he was the son of Carmen T. and Amelia Conte Acierno. He lived in Smethport and Kittanning before moving to the Coal Hill area. Mr. Acierno was a World War II veteran and served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot. He also served during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Air Force as a sergeant in the 3279th Ordnance Base Depot Company. He was a licensed commercial pilot and had an Airframe Power Plant Master Mechanics license. He was a member of the American Legion in Kittanning and also the Junior Order United American Mechanics lodge in Kittanning. He was a member of the Faith United Presbyterian Church in Kittanning. Mr. Acierno was married Nov. 19, 1991 to Tina McCauley, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, John Acierno of San Francisco, Calif., and Gordon Acierno of Reno, Nev.; two daughters, Debbie Acierno and Lila Acierno both of Kittanning, all from a previous marriage. He is also survived by two sisters, Anna Cunningham of Smethport and Nea Valeria of Florida. He was preceded in death by a brother, Mike Acierno and a sister, Maria Whiting. Graveside services will be conducted at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Mark Cummings, pastor of the Zion Baptist Church of Reedsburg, officiating. Interment will be in the Venus Cemetery. The Faller Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
